Jobs to go as buyout leads to shock move
ALMOST 50 skilled jobs are at risk under plans to close a manufacturing site near Poole.
Employees at National Oilwell Varco (NOV) at Holton Heath have been given notice of a consultation process in a letter seen by the Daily Echo.
The site is part of a multi-national company and specialises in manufacturing equipment for oil and gas drilling.
One employee, who asked not to be named, said: “We have recently bought out another oil company.
“We were told it would make our jobs stronger, but it’s being taken out to Dubai and Singapore and places like that.
“We’re still making a profit, which has increased by about 10 per cent since June 2008.
“We’ve been told we’re the most expensive to keep open in comparison to places like Singapore, but we’re a specialist site and they would be getting rid of a lot of customers – they will lose our name and they will lose a lot of experience.”
He said bosses at the plant were making representations to the NOV chiefs.
The worker added: “I’m fuming about it and so is every other bloke.
“We’ve got two people here who are husband and wife.”
Another colleague said: “We are still making a profit and still receiving new orders. I suppose this is just the way of the world at the moment.”
When the Echo contacted the Holton Heath site, plant manager Derek Goodall declined to comment.
NOV, whose headquarters is in Texas, USA, did not respond to the Echo’s request for a statement.
The letter, signed by Marvin De Menezes, director of manufacturing and product supply for NOV, said: “Should the proposal go forward, we will also endeavour, where practically possible, to try and find alternative positions for employees as long as they are willing to relocate wherever opportunities exist.”
